They say you have to do something 10,000 times before you master any particular ability. There’s definitely something to be said for repetition! Everyone prefers the surgeon that has done the most successful procedures, we want our team coach to have seen every trick play and have the most experience – and – we want a contractor that has completed the most projects exactly like the project we are considering.
At Promise Home Works, we may not have 10,000 jobs behind us, but we definitely view every remodeling project as if ten thousand things could go wrong! But to simplify, here’s our top 5 remodeling issues a homeowner could encounter, and our response to these difficult questions;
#1 Cost of the project
You have a certain style and finish in mind, but need to figure out if those are cost effective. Are you picking products that could put you over the top of your budget? Should/could you move things around? Can the sink move across the room? Can the toilet be moved to face the opposite direction? How do all these possibilities effect the cost?
Our policy at Promise Home Works is to send out an expert – not a salesman. Someone that has many years of experience in our field, but also knows products, costs and what’s involved in almost every scenario. This gives you an immediate awareness of cost versus value, and greatly helps with design decisions.
#2 Picking the right product, style, color and finish
What if you have no idea what style, color or finish you want? Where do you start? What do you pick first? What are your options?
We always try to have a great deal of samples on hand while reviewing the project. This allows you to begin to identify your aesthetics and the cost associated with various choices.
#3 Payment of the project
How much do I pay down and as the job progresses in order to make sure that I’m not going to be taken advantage of by an unscrupulous contractor? What if I make my down payment and never see my contractor again? Should I finance the project or use my own resources? What kind of financing is available?
We always suggest calling a company’s last few projects as referrals, checking reviews on Google and other sources, and using a company that’s established and – most importantly – actually cares about you.
At Promise Home Works we make the payments we receive from customers match the flow of the job. When we receive your project, we immediately begin purchasing product and staging your job in our warehouse. Many times, these purchases are specific to your job and can’t be returned, therefore, we set our payments up at 33% down, 33% upon start and 33% upon completion.
We work with a great home remodeling finance company and have very good terms available if this is an option you’d like to pursue.
#4 Time frame for starting the job – and – time frame for completion
When will the project start? How long will it take? Who will be in my house and for how long? What time will they get here every day and what time will they leave?
We are usually able to start the job as soon as all the material arrives – normally within 6 weeks – and – we don’t leave the job until it’s done. (We won’t disappear).
Very important; We don’t use sub-contractors so we know exactly who will be in your home. We don’t hire anybody we wouldn’t send to our grandmother’s house. We ask our lead carpenters to be very patient and kind when working with you to establish start times and stop times.
#5 Unforeseen issues
What if there are surprises? What if there is damage behind the wall we can’t see until the demo is completed? What if there are other issues behind the wall; mold, wiring, drain lines or ductwork that needs addressed?
When and if, an unforeseen circumstance causes us to have to adjust our scope of work – this is pretty rare – then we handle the issue with you immediately and only charge a reasonable cost for any changes necessary.
We certainly hope this list of “possible issues” helps to outline how we operate. We strive to prepare and prevent any problems, and when they do arise, we do what needs to be done to take care of any necessary changes as quickly and cost effectively as possible.
